Conservation of Old Dhaka Central Jail History

The transformation of the Old Dhaka Central Jail Compound is a significant heritage-led urban regeneration project in Bangladesh. Located in the historic core of Old Dhaka, the 27.93-acre site evolved from an Afghan fortification and Mughal stronghold into Dhaka Central Jail, which operated for over 228 years.

The design transforms a place of confinement into an open civic landscape that preserves historical memory while providing much-needed public spaces. The masterplan integrates heritage conservation, adaptive reuse, and contemporary public activities across three complementary zones. It preserves 51 historically significant buildings, repurposing former prison structures as museums, libraries, galleries, and public institutions.

Traditional materials and local craftsmanship, including lime mortar and cast-iron jalis, maintain architectural authenticity. Environmental strategies include restoring historic water bodies, creating new ponds, using permeable paving, rain gardens, and native planting to improve stormwater management and biodiversity.

Overall, the project reimagines the former prison as a vibrant public space that connects heritage, culture, ecology, and community life, while preserving the collective memory and identity of Old Dhaka.
