The Project is located in Phulpur Upazilla, Mymensingh district near the Meghalaya border of India. The home incepted as an ‘escape den’ for an urban family – brothers, sisters, cousins living at home or abroad, who from time on time, seek refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city life; placed in the lap of their ancestor’s land. The project is placed in a simple manner as a dwelling unit, circumferring a century old family courtyard of the Project Architect. It adopts the characteristics of our traditional growth pattern of our Rural residential settlement; specially when an extension is needed within a family compound.

The design commenced from the archetype of a traditional Rural homes of Bangladesh, sprouting into its own features. Surrounded by nature, the projects moulds with the adjacent landscape forming an intangible bond, welcoming all forms of life in, through its breathing and airy nature. As the design follows an open plan, the house is blended with the family court as well as connected with the surrounding lush green through its large and breathable apertures. The compound participates and welcomes nature, as well as the neighbors all year round for social gatherings. An open stair climbs from the inner court extending itself to a balcony that wraps around the house. A double height space that ties the indoor and outdoor space together, ensuring connectivity by all means- horizontally and vertically.

This place welcomes to create memories among close and distant family members, through its welcoming nature of place making and setting in a nostalgic area of premise of their great grandfathers.

The project is built using simple materials like brick, metal, glass and wood using low tech construction techniques. All building elements, i.e., door, window, pitched roof and railing are custom designed and made with utmost care on site engaging local craftsmen and artisan. Instead of opting for industrial solutions, the architect meticulously crafted and curated the details of his ancestorial home.

The landscape of the project is seen as a part of the building, not a separate element. The surrounding green encapsulates the compound, so in respect to the environment, without impacting much, local fruits and vegetables are planted, that serves the family occasionally.
